Abstract

The anatomy of root canals can represent a clinical challenge for professionals. In this study, the mesial root of the first permanent lower molar was described because its morphological configuration is very complex. For a root canal treatment to be successful, it is necessary to identify the anatomy since inability could cause endodontic failures. The mandibular first molar, being the first permanent tooth to erupt, requires a greater frequency of endodontic intervention. The anatomy of the internal root canal of the mesial root has been and continues to be important for the clinician due to the prevalence of curved canals, isthmuses, apical deltas, accessory canals and unions of root canals in different thirds. In the present review, an exhaustive search was carried out to collect information related to the root anatomy of the canal of the permanent mandibular first molar. The MEDLINE database was searched through the PubMed search engine using the following search criteria: mandibular first molars, mesial root, root anatomy, root canal morphology, number of canals and mesial root, configuration of the root and root canal system mesial, number of ducts.
