Prevalencia del conducto medio-mesial en primeros molares mandibulares evaluados por tomografía computarizada de haz cónico en una sub-población de Tacna, Perú

Introduction: It is of utmost importance to know the internal anatomy and its variations in the teeth we are going to treat. In endodontic treatment, all root canals should be located, which would lead us to one of the main factors for its success and thus guaranteeing all chemical-mechanical debridement of the pulp tissue.
Methodology: 55 cone beam computed tomography (TCHC) with a 5X5 FOV were evaluated. The tomography scans were analyzed with Sidexis software with the Xelis program, which automatically determined the contrast and brightness of the images. Observations were made from the floor of the pulp chamber to the dental apex, using two planes: axial and coronal. The chi-square statistical test was applied to determine the relationship between age group, gender, and the prevalence of mid-mesial canals.
Results: Only 10.91% of the evaluated tomography scans had the presence of a mid-mesial canal. On the right side, all (100%) of the mid-mesial canals were classified as "confluent" according to the Pomeranz classification; while on the left side, 50% were "confluent" and 50% were "fin."
Conclusions: The prevalence of mid-mesial canals in mandibular first molars was 10.91%, highlighting the importance of a detailed evaluation of root canals in endodontic treatments.
