Abstract

Dentin conditioning is designed to modify the dentin surface with the goal of optimizing the adhesion of sealing cements and improving the effectiveness of endodontic treatments. Among the most commonly used agents are ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA), both selected for their ability to remove the smear layer, promoting the exposure of dentin tubules. EDTA is widely recognized for its chelating capacity, allowing the effective removal of calcium found in hydroxyapatite without significantly altering the dentin structure. CA, for its part, has gained interest due to its ability to decalcify the dentin surface, promoting proper adhesion. However, the selection of the most appropriate conditioning agent remains a matter of debate depending on the therapeutic objective. The PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were searched. The aim was to analyze and compare the properties of EDTA and CA as dentin conditioning agents, evaluating their effects on dentin structure, their biocompatibility, and their impact on the adhesion of sealing cements.
